Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) are the lifeline of bookings for many Indian hotels. But with every booking comes a commission fee that impacts profitability. Below, we answer the most common questions hoteliers in India ask about OTA commissions.

What is an OTA commission?

An OTA commission is the percentage fee charged by an online travel agency for every confirmed booking. For example, if a guest books a room at ₹5,000 and the OTA commission is 20%, the hotel receives ₹4,000 while the OTA keeps ₹1,000.

What is the typical OTA commission in India?

In India, most OTAs charge 15% to 25% commission per booking. The exact percentage depends on the OTA, the property type, and the agreement you sign with them.

What are the commission rates for popular OTAs in India?

Here are the approximate commission ranges:

OTA Platform

Typical Commission Range

MakeMyTrip / Goibibo

18% – 22%

Booking.com

15% – 20%

Agoda

15% – 18%

Cleartrip

15% – 18%

Airbnb

12% – 18%

EaseMyTrip

15% – 18%

Yatra

15% – 20%

Do OTAs charge the same commission for all hotels?

No. Commission rates can vary depending on:

  • Hotel size and category (budget vs. luxury).

  • Location (metro city vs. tier-2 or tourist destination).

  • Negotiation with OTA account managers.

  • Whether you participate in “preferred” or “visibility boost” programs.

  • Date of agreement with platform

Do OTAs allow hotels to pay higher commission for more visibility?

Yes. Platforms like MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, and Booking.com allow hotels to increase their commission percentage (by 3–5%) in exchange for:

  • Higher ranking in search results.

  • Increased exposure in the app/website.

  • Access to “Preferred Partner” or “Genius” programs.

This can bring more bookings but reduces the net profit per booking.

Do all OTAs have the same payout cycle?

No.

  • ClearTrip - Settles on the checkin date of booking

  • Agoda - They provide two option VVC & Bank Transfer, both have different time lines.
