What is a GDS?
A network that connects hotels, airlines, and car rentals to travel agents and corporate booking tools worldwide. Think of it as the B2B version of OTAs.
How GDS Works
Unlike OTAs where consumers book directly, GDS operates behind the scenes:
- Hotel loads rates and inventory into the GDS network
- Travel agents search GDS terminals for available hotels
- Corporate booking tools pull hotel options from GDS
- Agent or system books the room on behalf of the traveler
- GDS confirms the reservation with the hotel
GDS is how most corporate travel managers and traditional travel agencies find and book hotels.
Major GDS Networks
| GDS | Headquarters | Key Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Amadeus | Spain | Largest GDS globally, strong in Europe and Asia |
| Sabre | USA | Dominant in North America, large corporate network |
| Travelport (Galileo + Worldspan) | UK | Strong in Asia-Pacific and Middle East |
GDS vs OTA
| Factor | GDS | OTA |
|---|---|---|
| Customer | Travel agents, corporate bookers | Individual travelers (B2C) |
| Booking Source | Travel management companies, agencies | Website and app |
| Commission | 10-15% (lower than OTA) | 15-25% |
| Guest Type | Corporate, group, and MICE | Leisure and individual travelers |
| Average Stay Value | Higher (corporate rates, longer stays) | Varies widely |
| Setup Complexity | Requires GDS connectivity partner | Simple extranet signup |
Does Your Hotel Need GDS?
GDS makes sense if:
- You're 50+ rooms with meeting/conference facilities
- Your location attracts corporate travelers (business districts, IT hubs, industrial areas)
- You want international corporate bookings
- You're a 3-star or above property
GDS may NOT be worth it if:
- You're a small budget hotel or homestay
- Your market is purely leisure/pilgrim tourism
- You have fewer than 20 rooms
- You don't have the infrastructure for corporate guests
How to Get Listed on GDS
Hotels don't connect to GDS directly. You need a connectivity partner:
- Channel Manager with GDS: Many channel managers (like SiteMinder, RateGain, eZee) offer GDS connectivity as an add-on
- Dedicated GDS providers: Companies like D-EDGE, Pegasus, or iHotelier specialize in GDS distribution
- Hotel chain affiliation: Joining a hotel consortium (like Best Western, Choice Hotels) provides automatic GDS access
GDS Chain Codes for India
Each hotel on GDS gets a unique property code. To be found easily, ensure your:
- Property name and address are accurate
- Room types and descriptions match reality
- Corporate rates (negotiated rates) are loaded correctly
- Photos and amenity lists are up to date
- Cancellation policies are clearly stated
GDS Performance Metrics
Track these to measure your GDS ROI:
- GDS revenue share: What percentage of total revenue comes from GDS?
- Look-to-book ratio: How many searches convert to bookings?
- ADR from GDS: Compare GDS ADR vs OTA and direct ADR
- Cost per acquisition: Total GDS fees divided by number of bookings
Most Indian hotels lose 20 to 30 percent of potential bookings to incomplete listings, wrong rates, or missing content. Our free audit checks your MakeMyTrip, Goibibo and Booking.com listings and tells you exactly what to fix.
